About the Role
eShocan is seeking a highly motivated and technically advanced Electrophotonic Research Engineer to join our Automotive R&D team. In this role, you will contribute to the next generation of electro-optic and integrated photonic technologies that power advanced vehicle systems — including autonomous driving sensors, quantum-enhanced imaging, and high-speed in-vehicle communications.
You will lead the research, design, simulation, and testing of cutting-edge photonic components, helping to integrate these innovations into scalable automotive solutions.
= Responsibilities
Conduct advanced R&D on electro-optic devices and integrated photonics with direct relevance to automotive applications such as:
LIDAR and quantum sensing
Secure vehicle-to-vehicle (V2V) and vehicle-to-infrastructure (V2X) communication
Optical interconnects for high-bandwidth automotive networks
Design and simulate integrated photonic devices using tools like COMSOL, Lumerical, and tidy3D
Develop layout and mask designs using KLayout or other photonic design environments; implement designs through PDK-based workflows
Collaborate with fabrication foundries and hardware vendors to realize high-performance photonic prototypes
Build and automate optical and electrical test setups, perform laboratory measurements, and analyze device performance
Communicate findings through technical reports, internal reviews, and high-impact publications
Interface with cross-functional teams, automotive partners, and academic collaborators to align technical development with system-level vehicle integration
Required Qualifications
Education & Experience:
PhD in Electrical Engineering, Applied Physics, Optics, or related field
OR Master’s degree with substantial hands-on experience in photonics R&D
Demonstrated expertise in electro-optic effects and photonic integration
Technical Skills:
Hands-on experience designing and characterizing electro-optic modulators, waveguides, and photonic integrated circuits (PICs)
Simulation expertise using electromagnetic and wave optics tools (e.g., COMSOL, Lumerical, tidy3D)
Familiarity with quantum sensor platforms (e.g., spin-defect systems) is a plus
Strong Python skills for experimental automation and data analysis
Understanding of device packaging, optomechanical integration, and PCB layout
