The Columbus Zoo and Aquarium is seeking a dedicated Elephant Endothelial Herpes Virus (EEHV) Veterinary Lab Technician to support our mission of empowering people and saving wildlife. This unique role offers the opportunity to work at the forefront of veterinary science, supporting both clinical and research efforts to ensure the health of our animal residents—especially our beloved elephants.

Responsibilities:

EEHV Lab Operations

  • Primary focus of this position is managing the Columbus Zoo’s EEHV lab, which will comprise approximately 75% of the technician’s time.
  • Manage all aspects of the Columbus Zoo’s EEHV lab, including performing assays, developing protocols, and maintaining equipment and supplies.
  • Be available for emergency lab work during weekends or evenings as needed.

Clinical Laboratory Support

  • Perform laboratory analyses such as hematology, chemistry, parasitology, and other clinical pathology procedures.
  • Ensure quality control of lab results and maintain diagnostic equipment in calibrated working order.
  • Maintain a clean, professional laboratory environment.

Sample & Record Management

  • Process medical samples for diagnostic testing and future banking.
  • Submit pathology samples and distribute biological samples to researchers, museums, and universities.
  • Maintain accurate medical records and assist with animal and specimen shipments.
  • Ensure compliance with SSP, TAG, and other institutional obligations.

Veterinary & Hospital Support

  • Maintain inventory of surgical, medical, pharmacological, and office supplies.
  • Ensure cleanliness and sterility of hospital facilities and equipment.
  • Coordinate procurement of external lab and veterinary consulting services.
  • Assist with medical care, including procedures, medication administration, and animal care.
  • Collaborate with animal care teams to provide superior medical support.
  • Support the organization’s mission and implement sustainable practices.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Qualifications:

Education & Certification

  • High school diploma or equivalent required.
  • Degree in Applied Science in Veterinary Technology or equivalent training/experience preferred.
  • Registered Veterinary Technician (RVT) certification in Ohio preferred.

Experience & Knowledge

  • Minimum one year of lab experience required.
  • Proven lab technician or related experience required.
  • Strong lab skills essential.
  • Knowledge of exotic animal medicine strongly desired.
  • Experience in zoo environments and with non-mammals preferred.

Communication & Collaboration

  • Strong verbal and written communication skills required.
  • Ability to develop and maintain cooperative working relationships with team members and external contacts.
  • Ability to provide excellent guest service and uphold guest service standards.

Flexibility & Work Ethic

  • Ability to work flexible hours, including evenings, weekends, and holidays.
  • May require on-call responsibilities for clinical and lab duties.
  • Ability to work independently and efficiently.

Work Requirements & Compliance

  • Proof of negative TB screening prior to placement and annually thereafter required.
  • Valid state-issued driver’s license and good driving record.
  • Ability to adhere to safety protocols and the Columbus Zoo Family of Park’s drug-free workplace policy.
  • Successful completion of a criminal background check.
