Medical Laboratory Assistant
Job Summary
The Medical Laboratory Assistant is responsible for reinforcing proper specimen collection and specimen acceptance criteria to ensure accurate laboratory testing and patient safety. A strong understanding of the laboratory's specimen collection manual is essential for this role.
The Medical Laboratory Assistant must demonstrate knowledge of safe laboratory practices, confidentiality regulations (HIPAA), and proficiency in phlebotomy procedures. This position also requires computer skills for test ordering and operation of the Laboratory Information System (LIS).
Excellent customer service and oral communication skills are essential when serving patients, physicians, and the public. Compassionate patient care and professionalism are key components of this role.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
- Perform phlebotomy and specimen collection procedures accurately and safely
- Reinforce proper specimen collection and handling procedures
- Verify specimen integrity and ensure specimens meet acceptance criteria
- Utilize the Laboratory Information System (LIS) for test ordering and specimen tracking
- Placing orders and Maintaining inventory
- Maintain compliance with HIPAA and patient confidentiality standards
- Follow all laboratory safety and infection prevention procedures
- Provide courteous and professional customer service to patients, visitors, providers, and staff
- Communicate effectively with laboratory personnel, providers, and other departments
- Assist in maintaining an organized and efficient laboratory work environment
- Support quality patient care through attention to detail and compassionate service
Position Type / Expected Hours of Work
- Full-time position
- Monday through Friday
- Hours: 7:00 AM – 4:30 PM
- Pay range $18.00 – $20.98
Travel Requirements
- Possible travel to local areas for the Phlebotomy Home Collection Program
Qualifications
- High School Diploma or equivalent required
- Certification and/or licensure in phlebotomy preferred
- Previous phlebotomy experience preferred
- Basic computer skills required
- Strong communication and interpersonal skills
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team
Skills & Competencies
- Knowledge of specimen collection and laboratory procedures
- Understanding of laboratory safety practices and infection prevention
- Familiarity with HIPAA and confidentiality regulations
- Strong attention to detail and organizational skills
- Ability to provide compassionate and professional patient care
- Effective verbal communication and customer service skills

Reporting Structure
Reports directly to the Laboratory Manager.
