The R&D Technician executes a wide variety of routine, non-routine, and complex tasks in a hands-on experimental laboratory environment. Occasionally, the technician will work in a manufacturing (or similar) environment to support Research and Development projects/activities. Research and Development projects target the development and commercialization of glass products and processes. The Technician will be capable of working independently or in a team to plan, test, analyze, and document experimental results pursuant to Research and Development projects/activities.
Education
Associate Degree or higher in Electrical Engineering, Electrical Technology, Chemical Engineering, Physics, Chemistry, and Material Science
This position, in the Advanced Manufacturing Technologies Group, supports research and development of glass, coated glass, and functional devices and the processes for their production. This position involves extensive hands-on work in a laboratory environment to run experiments, record and analyze data, and document results. The duties may also include development of new and Client test and measurement methods for characterization of new and existing processes.
Job Responsibilities
Works in a safe manner and strictly adheres to all environment, health, and safety protocols specified by Vitro as well as those specified by local, state, and federal regulations/laws.
Completes tasks fully and on-time; keeps scientists/project leaders informed regarding status of work and promptly communicates any problems with tasks or questionable data.
Independently and in collaboration with others, plans and organizes work to be done.
Test samples (e.g., chemical/environmental durability, etc.) of coated and non-coated specimens.
Uses a variety of instruments (e.g., spectrophotometers, electrical probes, ellipsometers, optical microscopes, cameras) to characterize samples and document the observations. Organizes and records data, results, and summaries in appropriate lab notebooks, spreadsheets, etc. Performs data analytics (e.g., statistical analysis) of experimental and trial data) and summarizes validity of experimental results based on these analytics.
Helps develop new methods of characterizing processes including new tools, instrumentation, and data acquisition tools.
At times, performs tasks, such as those described above, at Vitro production facilities, customer facilities, supplier facilities, and/or other facilities pursuant to R&D projects/activities.
Executes other tasks as appropriate for a laboratory technician including, e.g., lab space management / housekeeping and tasks that support safe working conditions and practices
Desired Skills/Experience
Aptitude and desire to do hands-on laboratory experiments and plant trials and surveys, and experience doing such work
Experience using laboratory instrumentation and experimentation
Experience with simple design of new tools or processes for fabrication of functional devices
Experience in organizing, plotting, and analyzing experimental data and writing laboratory reports
Hands on experience in operating and maintaining equipment; work outside a laboratory setting may be considered equivalent
Good written and verbal communication skills
Takes initiative and is resourceful; exhibits an ability to develop and apply Client methods for solving problems
Proactive with ability to work:
Independently without frequent/close supervision and
As a member of a highly matrixed team comprising a variety of science and technology professionals in a fast-paced environment
Aptitude and desire to continually learn and expand skill set via hands-on learning, self-study/readings, and learning from other personnel
