Oregon Health & Science University

Company : Oregon Health & Science University

Department Overview:

The incumbent will provide advanced scientific expertise in genetics, epigenetics, transcriptomics, genome editing, sequencing technologies, and bioinformatics to support both research and clinical initiatives at the Center for Embryonic Cell and Gene Therapy (CECGT).

The position plays a central role in advancing the Center’s research portfolio focused on the biology of gametes, embryos, and pluripotent stem cells through the application of state-of-the-art embryology, genomic, genome editing, and bioinformatics technologies. The incumbent will conduct Center research projects using mouse and nonhuman primate models, as well as mouse, nonhuman primate, and human gametes, embryos, pluripotent stem cells, and relevant tissues. Research activities will integrate embryology, developmental biology, molecular and cellular biology, and computational genomics approaches.

Function/Duties of Position:

Technical Research and Project Leadership

  • Conduct advanced research in gamete, embryo, stem cell, and molecular biology, including gamete and embryo micromanipulation; in vitro gametogenesis (IVG) via somatic cell nuclear transfer (SCNT); genome editing and gene correction in gametes, embryos, and cultured cells; mitochondrial replacement therapy (MRT); induced pluripotent stem cell (iPSC) and embryonic stem cell (ESC) derivation, culture, and differentiation.
  • Perform molecular and genomic analyses, including whole-genome, exome, and mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) sequencing using short- and long-read sequencing platforms; genetic modification of cell lines; and studies of epigenetic and transcriptional signatures of pluripotent cells.
  • Conduct protein analyses and other biochemical assays; prepare media and reagents; maintain laboratory organization and general upkeep; and perform animal handling as required.
  • Assist in experimental planning and study design, including optimization of protocols and troubleshooting.
  • Develop, maintain, and update experimental records, laboratory protocols, and standard documentation in both manual and electronic formats.
  • Assume scientific leadership and responsibility for designated Center research projects.

Data Analysis, Reporting, and Scholarly Dissemination

  • Prepare descriptive and analytical reports for manuscripts, grant applications, progress reports, and regulatory submissions.
  • Analyze experimental and genomic data; generate high-quality graphical representations; and contribute to the writing and revision of scientific manuscripts.
  • Present research findings at national and international scientific meetings.
  • Actively participate in education, training, and outreach activities, representing the Center in professional and scientific forums.

Bioinformatics and Data Management

  • Organize, curate, and maintain research datasets, experimental records, and databases, ensuring accuracy, integrity, and compliance.
  • Extract, analyze, and interpret genomic and epigenomic data from high-throughput sequencing experiments, including preimplantation embryos, gametes, pluripotent stem cells, and related samples.
  • Develop, maintain, and apply bioinformatics pipelines and analytical workflows as needed to support Center research projects.
  • Contribute to the advancement of CECGT research capabilities by maintaining up-to-date knowledge of emerging long-range sequencing technologies, analytical methods, applications, and advances in bioinformatics.

Laboratory and Program Management

  • Manage day-to-day laboratory operations, including the development and implementation of Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs).
  • Assist with the preparation, submission, and maintenance of IBC, IACUC, and IRB protocols.
  • Train, supervise, and evaluate the performance of Center staff; delegate tasks; and oversee the work of students, postdoctoral fellows, and research personnel.
  • Coordinate the purchase, maintenance, and oversight of laboratory equipment and supplies.
  • Support the Center Director in staff recruitment and onboarding activities.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Required Qualifications:

  • Doctoral degree in relevant field AND a minimum of 7 years of relevant post-doctoral work experience. Internal candidates must have completed 3-5 years at the Assistant Staff Scientist level.
  • 3-5 years relevant research experience in reproductive and genetic biology research.
  • Demonstrated independent proficiency in gamete and embryo micromanipulation techniques; genome editing; pluripotent stem cell culture and differentiation; molecular and cellular biology; bioinformatics; sequencing technologies; and other advanced research methodologies relevant to the Center’s work.
  • Strong oral and written communication skills, with the ability to effectively prepare scientific manuscripts, reports, and presentations.
  • Proven ability to independently design studies, manage and analyze complex datasets, and publish scientific findings, including proficient use of data spreadsheets, statistical software, and bioinformatics tools.
  • Ability to prioritize competing work demands, manage multiple projects simultaneously, and coordinate research activities effectively with Center staff and collaborators.
  • Excellent laboratory management and organizational skills, with careful attention to detail and adherence to quality, safety, and regulatory standards.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Doctoral degree in a relevant field and 7+ years of gamete, embryo and stem cell research experience.
  • Degree in OBGYN, Genetics, Molecular Biology, Public Health, Biology, or Zoology with experience in primate embryo and ESC culture, molecular biology and physiology.
